What does a small island in the English Channel have to do with the T-shirt you wear?
Quite a lot, actually. Jersey knit fabric takes its name from the island of Jersey, located off the coast of France, where knitting was once an important part of local life and trade.
As early as the 16th century, islanders were producing woollen knitwear for export. Knitted stockings were particularly popular, followed later by the heavy woollen sweaters traditionally worn by fishermen. Over time, the island's name became associated with a type of knitted fabric.
Today, jersey can be made from cotton, wool, viscose, polyester and various fibre blends. Its softness and natural stretch make it a popular choice for T-shirts, dresses, children's clothing and everyday garments.
At Global Textile in Uzbekistan, we manufacture cotton jersey knit fabric used in modern apparel production, particularly for T-shirts.
